DFKI Bremen – Robotics Innovation Center

The Robotics Innovation Center (RIC) belongs to the Bremen location of the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI GmbH). Here and in the RIC branch office at the University of Osnabrück, under the direction of Prof. Dr. Frank Kirchner, scientists develop mobile robot systems which are able to solve complex tasks on land, under water, in the air, or in space. These design concepts benefit from the variety of nature: climbing/walking four-, six-, or eight-legged robots, snake-like underwater vehicles, and two-armed transport robots resemble patterns from a natural environment, combining advantages of new materials with successfully evolved locomotion patterns and forms.

The German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) GmbH, based in Kaiserslautern, Saarbrücken, and Bremen, and with a project office in Berlin, is the largest research center worldwide in the field of artificial intelligence.

The DFKI as leader of the consortium is responsible for administrative and coordinative tasks within the project. On the technical side DFKI, in cooperation with the various partners, is in charge of defining, developing and constructing the scout rover segment of the cooperative FASTER system. Further, a test bed for the mission demonstration will be defined, set up and operated for the sake of validating the concept in an out most realistic environment on earth.
